Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture is the art of inserting filiform needles into the skin in order to facilitate balance and healing.  The points are chosen by utilizing a variety of diagnosis methods.  Most acupuncture points are located on meridians.  Meridians are the large rivers of energy that flow through your body.  Acupuncture points are where that energy pools and concentrates.  By stimulating those areas and and combining them with other points, the practitioner helps facilitate balance and healing.  The number of treatments needed to help each person varies depending on the main concern for treatment.  Sometimes, herbal teas may be necessary to resolve certain issues more effectively. These herbal treatments may include herbs that are in pill form, or possible raw and powdered for making tea. Diet therapy may also be advised to help in resolving certain illnesses. A standard series of treatments is between 3-15 sessions.

Cupping is one of the oldest methods of healing in Traditional Chinese medicine.  The modern method for many acupuncturists today is glass cups. Clear thick glass cups are preferred because they do not break as easily, and they allow the practitioner to evaluate the effects of treatment while it is being given.

A cupping session may last between 5-30 minutes. Several cups may be placed on your body at the same time. Essential oils or other plant oils (olive oil etc.) may be applied to the skin before a treatment. This allows for the cups to create a stronger seal on the skin and easily move across the surface of the skin. Cupping can cause swelling and bruising of the skin, but should resolve with in a few days. The location and coloration of the bruises can be used diagnostically.  Cupping can be used for pain management, deep tissue massage, detoxification, and gastrointestinal disorders.
